Job Description

What You’ll Get to Do:

  • Under the technical direction of the assigned attorney, assists in obtaining documents and other information related to cases of a highly complex and difficult nature, relating to civil actions or administrative violations within the jurisdiction of the United States Attorney’s Office (USAO). Conducts a thorough and systematic analysis of the documents and information obtained and reports findings to AUSA.

  • Decides upon the most effective methods for planning, scheduling, and conducting investigations, and identifies required resources.

  • Develops an understanding of applicable federal, state or local laws to the extent necessary to make sound decisions on direction and scope of investigations.

  • Contacts federal, state and local officials, and other organizations and individuals related to the subject of investigation, to gather facts, obtain statements, learn sequences of events, obtain explanations and otherwise advance investigative progress.

  • Examines books, ledgers, payrolls, cost reports, billing statements, invoices, correspondence, computer data and other records pertaining to the transactions, events, or allegations under investigation.

  • Establishes and/or verifies relationships among all facts and evidence obtained or presented to confirm authenticity of documents, corroborate witness statements, and otherwise build proof necessary for successful litigation.

  • Assists in the preparation of investigative plans and interim and final reports and recommendations. Includes significant findings and conclusions, recommendations for additional investigative actions, and candid assessments of strengths and weaknesses of witnesses, documentary evidence, or other aspects of case.

  • Performs research to locate potential witnesses and provides advice to AUSA on selection of witnesses.

  • Provides analytical advice and assistance with respect to compiling documents and physical evidence, and creating charts, graphs, videotapes, and other audiovisual materials for use by AUSAs in motions and at trial. Devises methods for obtaining, preserving, and presenting evidence to greatest effect.

  • Communication skills are extremely important. Works and interacts professionally and effectively with all levels of staff and the public. Skill in meeting and dealing with people in a courteous and tactful manner.

  • Ability to meet established deadlines and work as a team player in a professional office. Contractor must have physical agility and the ability to move case files weight up to 40 pounds.

You’ll Bring These Qualifications:

  • Experience in document analysis, particularly in relation to fraud cases.

  • Two years’ experience in performing on-line database research and telephone research.

  • Working knowledge of various public repositories of information.

  • Familiarity with specific subject matter helpful - Medicare and Medicaid claims, student loan programs, DoD contracting, etc.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Undergraduate degree preferred; familiarity with automated litigation support helpful.

These Qualifications Would be Nice to Have:

  • A well-qualified candidate should have experience with Medicare and Medicaid claims, student loan programs, and Department of Defense (DOD) contracting.
