CACI International Naval Architect / Structural Engineering Lead in Norfolk, Virginia

Job Description

Position Announcement: CACI is seeking an experienced Naval Architect / Structural Engineering Lead for a new program we expect to start in the December 2020 timeframe or soon after. This will be a newly awarded program that is expected to last for multiple years.

The Structural Engineering Lead will be the technical and planning lead for the CACI Customer Support Team, primarily located in Franklin, LA. As part of the CACI team, the off-site group will be intimately involved with the customer working Engineering, Planning, Supply Support, and Production operations. The Structural Engineering Lead should be accomplished in Structural Engineering as well as possessing a background in supervising the Planning and Estimation efforts. This position is a critical position in ensuring adherence to engineering and technical principal and contractual requirements.

Responsibilities:Working closely with the Project Manager, the US Navy customer, and other teaming partners and stakeholders, duties may include:

  • Structural Engineering design of welding platforms and jigs used to support the construction of the aluminum structures

  • Interpret existing structural design and the development of Visual Work Instructions that take a given structural design and provide specific sequencing of manufacturing tasks integrated with QA efforts as well as Testing requirements

  • Assisted by an Engineering Planner, working directly for the Project Manager to fulfill the duties and contractual statement of work

  • Provide engineering expertise in construction of aluminum structures

  • Lead discussions and meetings as necessary for carrying-out the functions and duties


  • 10 years or more credible engineering experience in the design and construction of complex marine structures such as barges, ships hulls, decks, bulkheads, foundations, sponsons, elevators or deck houses

  • Familiarity with structural production planning techniques such as lay out, lofting and prefabrication of structural sub-assemblies

  • Familiarity with structural weld joint design welding, structural inspection and non- destructive testing

  • Be familiar with the lifting and handling of heavy structures (10 tons or more), including design and testing of rigging gear, calculation of centers of gravity, and crane operations

  • Experience with heavy aluminum structures, ½ in. thick or greater

  • Experience in building structures in an inverted position

  • Understand structural dimensioning including tolerances and tolerance build up

  • Experienced in the use of computer aided design systems and production planning and scheduling systems

  • He/she should possess a knowledge of structural estimating and scheduling and be familiar with the application and use of an Earned Value Management System

  • Ability and willingness to travel within the continental U.S., this travel (less than 25%) would include travel to customer sites. The candidate must maintain a valid driver’s license

  • Ability to work with a diverse group of people of different skills, backgrounds, organizations and management levels

Education and Experience:

  • Applicants should hold a BS in Engineering, Naval Architecture, or similar from an accredited university; or have passed the engineer in training examination in that field
