What You’ll Get to Do:
Support the incorporation of Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) guidance and mandates into AFRICOM’s plans, operations, actions, and milestones. Provide subject matter advice on UNSCR 1325 and related resolutions as well as US WPS Strategy and Legislation. Include gender perspectives into steady state and contingency military planning and operations. Support, inform, and provide timely advice to the AFRICOM Command Group and Staff. Coordinate and collaborate with the Joint Staff, the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD), Service Components, and the USG interagency on WPS / Gender Advising guidance, policy, and activities. Participate in DOD WPS Working Groups.
More About this Role:
Perform the functions as a US Africa Command (USAFRICOM) Gender Advisor in support of Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) topics/issues
Serve as a Senior advisor for the incorporation WPS guidance and mandates into Combatant Command (CCMD) plans, operations, actions, exercises, and security cooperation activities. Capture lessons learned and best practices for integrated gender perspectives.
Provide senior level advise to the Command on UNSCR 1325 and related resolutions, requirements under the US WPS strategy and US WPS Legislation, and the inclusion of the gender perspective into steady state and contingency military planning and operations
Participate in USAFRICOM operational planning teams, joint planning groups, and working groups.
Support, inform, and provide timely subject matter advice to the Gender Advisor, WPS Specialist, and HQ staff
Contribute to the revision of USAFRICOM strategies, plans, and policies ensuring compliance with the WPS legislation at the command
You’ll Bring These Qualifications:Education: BA or BS in behavioral science, cultural studies, sociology, or related discipline.
5+ years of experience with the US military or DoD
2+ years with implementing the WPS mandate
2+ years of experience at a combatant command and/or service component headquarters
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
Required Skills, Clearances, etc.:
Current Top Secret/Specialized Compartmented Information Security Clearance.
Experience with joint doctrine, joint strategic planning, and the joint operational planning process
Experience with DoD security cooperation planning and programming
Experience conducting gender analysis and assessments
Experience working with USG interagency departments and agencies
Training in the duties of a Gender Advisor through either a NATO certified of U.S. operational gender course or a comparable USG interagency or NGO training program
These Qualifications Would be Nice to Have:
Postgraduate degree and advanced vocational training in behavioral science, cultural studies, sociology, or related topics
Direct experience working in the AFRICOM AOR
